It is September 14th and for the last few days the mornings have been crisp with a refreshing cool air. There are some leaves on random trees beginning to turn an auburn orange color and some of those leaves are beginning to fall. This time of year reminds me of one thing…Football! When I was a kid, I loved watching the KC Chiefs. For most of my childhood, Marty Schottenheimer was the Head Coach. I used to think that football was all about the players. On Sundays, I’d see Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith crushing quarterbacks. I hardly saw the head coach do anything but stand there and shout at the ref. Now looking at it from a different perspective, I can see how disorganized a team would be without someone to coordinate the plays, players, and other coaches. I see this all the time in the restaurants I dine at or even the business offices I go to. You can even tell pretty quickly in a local church if there is a good leader coordinating the congregation or if the congregation is trying to coordinating the pastor. Now can you imagine what a football team would be like if each player decided what the head coach’s job would be? Can you imagine how disorganized a football team would be if all 53 players decided which plays to run? That would look similar to the Oakland Raiders! (I had to get a shot in!)
As a church planter/lead pastor, this is currently the pressure I am facing heading into this new season for The Table. There is a lot of work to be done and I believe we have an amazing group of people willing to roll up their sleeves to accomplish some amazing Kingdom building work. We are now hosting 2 Table Gatherings per week, which includes 2 meals, 2 worship sets, 2 kids’ events, and 2 sermons. This also includes the normal duties that come along with being a pastor. We have already taken over the property management (ie…lawn mowing, maintenance etc…) of the new property/facility. We are also gathering bids and designs for the new space. Within the next few months we will begin the remodel process. Oh, and did I mention that we are working full time jobs in the secular world as well. I know that the coordinating of people and resources will be my biggest challenge during the next 12 months. Please pray for me and with me that glory would be brought to God by the decisions that are made. If I were a head coach, only a win would be riding on it. I know the stakes are so much higher for our church.
During the past couple of months we have heard statements like:
“We love The Table! We don’t know where our family would be without it!”
“There’s just something about The Table that I like…it’s like taking a vitamin every week.”
“I have had more meaningful, deep conversations at The Table than I have had in the past 3 years in church.”
These are exciting times for us as we pursue our mission by creating communities that expand the Kingdom through radical compassion.
Thanks for your continued faithfulness in your partnership with prayer and financial support!
