One of my favorite Bible jokes is about a man named Eutychus. Here is how it goes:
Q: Why is there a man in the Bible named Eutychus?
A: Because You'd of cussed too if you had fallen from a 3 story window...
I'm sure you are wondering by now where I am going with this. Take a look at this story found in Acts 20:
7 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 9 Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. 10 Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!” 11 Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. 12 The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.
I can just imagine Luke, the author of this story, mixing it up with Paul and some of the other guys around a fire one night and reminiscing about this story. I can hear Luke saying, "Hey Timothy, remember a few nights ago when Paul was going on and on and on and then bam...Eutychus is on the ground..."
Is it possible that Paul, who was so eloquent with words in letters, was a bit hard to listen to in person? However, I'd take a pastor who has the faith of Paul over the most eloquent speaker any day. Are you journeying with people who proclaim "Don't be alarmed" by what's going on around you? Are you on an adventure with Christ followers who are proclaiming that "He's alive!" We are in the business of waking people from their slumber! This is life at The Table!!!
With sincere love for each of you,
