The Snyder family, Norman and Nola, Merce and Earl, Toby and June...These were my neighbors at the house that I grew up in. They were great neighbors! They were always kind. They always watched out for all of us neighborhood kids. They often bought whatever fundraiser item we were peddling for school or scouts. They all showed a genuine interest in the well being of our family.
I have watched plenty of Judge Judy episodes to know and understand what bad neighbors are. These are neighbors that sue each other at the drop of a hat. Neighbors who become friends just long enough to borrow money or tools and then never pay them back or return the borrowed items. Neighbors who destroy each others' property or who don't ever take care of their own property. Neighbors who are selfish, self focused, and who care nothing more than for their own well being.
I would be willing to bet that if you had the choice as to having bad neighbors or good neighbors...you would choose good ones. We might not always have the choice of who are neighbors are, but we all have the choice as to what kind of neighbor we will be. The Bible gives a lot of guidance on being a good neighbor. Jesus said that we should love our neighbor as we love ourself. Everyone wants a good neighbor, so let's be the ones we're looking for.
The first step in loving your neighbor is knowing their name. The longer you go without introducing yourself, the more awkward it can get. So don't put it off another day. Get to know your neighbors by their names.
With sincere love for each of you,
