Jon and I were married in May 2002. Before we knew it, August had come which meant I would be returning to school, we would be moving and Jon would need a job. We had a plan, but nothing seemed to be falling in line. I turned to the verses found in Matthew 7:7-8 consistently, praying that my plan would ‘work out’. Finally I had to surrender that God had a plan that was different than mine.
When every door seemed to close, all I could do was keep seeking, keep knocking that God would open the door he had made for us. One at a time, the next step became visible, then the next, until we were settled with a home, a job and back to school!
Mathew 7:7-8 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened."
I like a plan, clear direction, and timelines. That’s not too much to ask, is it? Especially from the Creator of the Universe? Unfortunately, instead of receiving these “answers” when I’m seeking them, the answer is usually that things in me are what need to change. This is especially true for me in times of uncertainty. Change is hard, and each time, I have leaned heavily on these verses.
Every time I’m facing another time of uncertainty, I have to surrender my expectations and my desire to know everything up front. Instead, I have to accept the challenge of Matthew 7:7-8 to ‘keep on asking and to keep on knocking until the door is opened.’
It seems like all of us regularly face some uncertainty, if you are not, just wait; it’s coming! I would challenge you today to write out what you are going to “keep asking” for, what you are going to “keep seeking,” what doors you’re going to “keep knocking” on. Then turn it over to God and trust He will be faithful.
