Language Barrier

May 8, 2018

Almost 15 years ago now, I was giving a speech in a very small house in Juarez, Mexico.  This was the first out-of-country mission trip that I had led or had even been on.  I was a 22 year-old youth pastor who had amazingly watched his church (some youth and some adults) spend an entire week in the incredible heat to build this house for a family that was previously living in wood pallets and cardboard boxes.  When the house was completed, there was a ceremony to dedicate the house and to give the family a new Bible.  I was given the honor to give the dedication speech.  I was unprepared.  I was nervous.  I didn't even speak the same language.  Soon after the trip, I had a chance to rewatch my speech because it had been recorded.  I would stumble over a few words then our interpreter would beautifully interpret my mess into a flowing graceful dialect.  That was how the entire dedication went.  I'm sure it was rough for those in the room that spoke english!  In the second chapter of Acts, we read about the incredible arrival of the Holy Spirit and immediately we see God's initial plan for taking the Gospel to all nations.  Take a look:

2 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.

7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!

Did you know that there are an estimated 2.2 billion Christians in the world today.  That is about 2,200,000,000.  WOW!!!!!  I believe the plan that was set forth so long ago for us as disciples to "go" is working.  Of coarse it is working, it is God's plan.  What if, 2,200,000,001 is living next door to you?

With sincere love for each of you,

Pastor Jon
