If Jesus rose from the dead...

May 10, 2018

I'm sure you've been there.  You have had something break on your car or in your house.  You had to get an estimate on getting it fixed.  So you say, "that isn't too bad, so I'll go ahead and fix it."  Then when you get the actual bill it is much, much higher than estimated.   We live in a world where the majority of people and businesses talk a good game, but seldom are they able to produce the quality of service to which they promise.  I read a quote this week that captured my attention.  Tim Keller says, "If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn't rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said?  The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching, but whether or not he rose from the dead."  Now, you and I know, that when we have a negative experience with something or someone, we are more than willing to share that news with others.  Let's continue our journey in Acts 2 today to see what the Disciples were saying about Jesus:

32 “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. 33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today. 34 For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
35 until I humble your enemies,
making them a footstool under your feet.”’

36 “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”

Not only did Jesus say that he was going to die and be raised from the dead, but the Disciples clearly stated that they witnessed those events be fulfilled.  Now if the community that Peter is now speaking into, were the same people who handed Jesus over to be crucified, then we can say that Peter actually believed what he saw happen.  What else would give him the boldness to continue?  What else would give the other Disciples the passion to share the Good News?  Jesus both promised and completely delivered!

With sincere love for each of you,

Pastor Jon
